The GNU/Linux Community

I have heard so many people wax eloquent about the Free Software community over the years now it is my turn. :D

Warning: Some of the following thoughts may contain sarcasm, cinematic creative paint spillage and partial truth exposure.

There seem to be three major points of view on the subject. (I am rounding down for the sake of whatever...)

Lathiests: The Linux community does not exist. If it does they are a bunch of really mean geeks that have a sick sense of humor and when I die I expect to find them..... uh you get the gist.

Freedomarians: We are all one big happy family who's mission is to free all of the minds of the world from lock in and lock out. It is essential man.

Corporatites: The community provides us with a much broader reach and speed when it comes to improving the code. We do not care who you are as long as you contribute to the overall success of all of our commercial ventures.

And the winner.... is all of the above.

Lets say that all of the people who participate in the free software community were all in one ever expanding room. I think that you would discover that the only thing that makes it a community is the fact that everyone is in one really big room. Everyone would choose to be in that room for their own reasons. It is out of this that some of the most amazing applications are developed which of course serves to draw more people in.

It is all pretty amazing really when you stop and think about it. All of these different people that transcend age race and religion for the sake of code.
